Friday September 4

Nature Movie

Come by the Nature Center and see nature and animals up close and personal with our featured presentation “Microcosmos.”  Ongoing all day.

Saturday September 5

9:30am Morning Hike

Meet at the Cedar Forest Trail for a 2-mile rocky walk in the woods before it gets hot!  Guided by your own park naturalist!  Water, bug spray and long pants recommended. 

1:30pm History Talk & Walking Tour

If only the cedars could talk. . . !  Come learn about the rich history of the park as we walk to some old park buildings and take a cool refreshing drink from a 1930s water fountain!  Meet at the Nature Center. 

6:00pm Evening Hike

Join fellow campers for an easy, leisurely one half mile evening nature hike on the Cedar Glade Trail through a unique ecosystem of forests and glades.  Meet Dava at Park Office.

Sunday September 6

11:00am Cave Talk

Under our feet is an underground world of caves!  Meet at the Nature Center wearing sturdy shoes for a short walk to the entrances of two caves and hear an interesting talk about how caves form, what lives in them, and how to protect them.

11:00am History Walk and Talk

If only the cedars could talk. . . !  Come learn about the rich history of the park as we walk to some old park buildings and take a cool refreshing drink from a 1930s water fountain!  Meet at the Nature Center.

2:00pm Cave Talk

Tuesday August 11th   

11:00 am Macramé- Join Sarah to learn how to make jewelry by tying knots! Meet at the Recreation Building!

1:00 pm Beetle Bugs- Come paint your own bug with Sarah at the Recreation Building!

3:00 pm Animal Tracks- Lets use tracks to identify animals! Make your own book of tracks with Sarah at the Recreation Building.

5:00 pm Bug Hunt! – Meet Sarah at the Camper Check-In to look for insects of all shapes and sizes!

 

Wednesday August 12th   

11:00 am Hiking Safety- Do you know what it takes make it to the end of the trail? Come meet Sarah at the Recreation Building to find out!

1:00 pm Key Chains- Make a simple holder for your keys! Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building.

3:00 pm Birds of Prey- What do you know about our native raptors? Come find out from Sarah at the Recreation Building!

5:00 pm Scavenger Hunt! – Meet Sarah at the Camper Check-In to see what can be found in the park!

 

Thursday August 13th 

12:00 pm Turtles- Why do turtles have shells? Meet Sarah outside of the Visitors Center to find out and meet one of the park’s sliders!

2:00 pm Afternoon Movie: Open Season– Come watch this movie in the Recreation Building by the Pool.  Free popcorn!

4:00 pm Butterflies- Lets talk about butterflies! Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building to make a origami butterfly of your own!

7:30 pm Sunset Hike- Nature comes alive as the sun goes down! Meet Sarah at the Visitors Center to take a mile stroll to the overlook. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Friday August 14th

10:00 am Sidewalk Art- Draw nature scenes with chalk! Meet Sarah behind the Camper Check-In.

12:00 pm Nature Bingo! – Bingo with a twist. Meet Sarah at the Recreation building to play!

2:00 pm Star Wheels- Lets make a map of the night sky! Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building.

8:00 pm The Night Sky- Meet Sarah at the softball field by the picnic area to look for constellations! Bring a flashlight. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Saturday August 15th         

10:00 am Cedar Trees- Lets talk about this interesting tree and make a cookie to take with you! Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building.

12:00 pm Snakes – Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building to get acquainted with our native snakes!

2:00 Wildflowers of TN- Lets talk about our native flowers and make a flower of your own! Meet Sarah at the Recreation Building!

8:00 pm Owl Prowl!- Meet at the Camper Check-In to see if we can call out our native owls! Bring a flashlight and friends! All children must be accompanied by an adult.

* Safety comes first! Tennis shoes and bug spray recommended for all hikes and night programs! *

 

Drink lots of water if you are planning to be out in the summer heat!

Vote between a few animated nature-themed movies when you avoid packing up camp by coming to the Nature Center.

Meet at the volleyball court across from the Assembly Hall and next to the baseball field to work on your serve and play an informal game.

2:00pm Animal Charades: Play a fun-filled game by acting out some of your favorite animals.  Come to the air-conditioned Nature Center to avoid the afternoon sun and bring lots of friends!

Friday, July 10th

3:30pm Cave Talk & Walk: Hiding under our feet is an underground honeycomb of caves!  Meet at the Nature Center wearing sturdy shoes for a short walk to the entrances of two very different caves!

7:00pm Evening Hike: Enjoy the coolness of the afternoon and maybe catch a glimpse of some fireflies! Meet at the trailhead of the Cedar Forest Trail ready to do a 2 mile hike into the woods.

 Saturday, July 11

9:00am Nature Trek: Hike with your very own park naturalist and see all 3 ecosystems of the park on the 5 mile Hidden Springs Trail!  Come prepared w/ water, snack, sturdy shoes and bug spray. Meets at the trailhead.

11:00am History Talk & Walk: Come hear the fascinating story of how Cedars of Lebanon became a state park as we walk to some of the old buildings, and learn the history behind them.  Meet at the Nature Center.

1:00pm Softball:  Let’s play some ball!  Meet at the baseball field for some batting and fielding fun!  All ages and experience levels welcome.  Come anyway even if you do not own a glove or bat (balls and bats provided). Beginners can learn the game here!  

3:00pm Snakes! Meet some of our slithery friends in the Nature Center, and learn about a few that live here in the park!

8:00pm Night Hike:  Meet at the Nature Center for an enjoyable walk looking for “spider eyes” and listening to the peaceful sounds of the night!

10:30am Story Time: Let’s take a relaxing moment and enjoy a Native American story about the importance of “Turtle” in the theater room of the Nature Center.

Friday June 26th:

1:30pm History Talk & Hike: Come hear the fascinating story of how Cedars of Lebanon came to be a park by   visiting some old park buildings!  Meet at Nature Center.

5:00pm Snakes! Meet in the cool/air conditioned Nature Center for a presentation about some basic facts on snakes, and meet some of our slithery guests staying in the Nature Center this summer.

8:00pm Campfire! Follow the trail to the field behind the Nature Center to enjoy the company of your fellow campers. Marshmallows, music and fun! Please bring camp-chairs.   

Saturday June 27th:

9:00am Morning Hike: Wake up and get walking before it gets hot! Discover some of the plants, animals and history of the park on an easy 0.5 mile guided walk through the Cedar Glades. Meet at  Park Office. (All ages)

3:00pm Meet George! Everyone’s favorite garbage man! Join us in the Nature Center to meet and  learn some of the cool, “gross,” and interesting facts about our resident turkey vulture, George.    

7:00pm Evening Guided Hike:  Let’s venture into the shade of the largest Eastern Red Cedar Forest in North America. As the sun goes down, we might catch a glimpse of some of the park’s wildlife. Long pants, sturdy shoes and bug spray is recommended. Meet at the parking lot for Shelter #1. (All ages able to hike a rocky 2 miles)  

Sunday June 28th:

11:00am Reduce! Reuse! Recycle! Meet at the Camp Store for a short discussion followed by

an un-nature hike through the campgrounds.  Participants will compete for prizes! (4 years and up)

8:30pm Night Hike

Meet at the Nature Center for a quick presentation on sounds & animals of the night, followed by a 0.5 mile walk on the Dixon Merritt Trail. Sturdy shoes (no flip flops), bug spray and long pants recommended. (4 yrs & up)

Saturday June 13th:

10:00am Fossil Scavenger Hunt

Let’s get out and discover some of the creatures of the past. Meet at the Park Office. (All ages)

2:00 pm Kick-Ball

Come to the Ballfield for some good old fashion fun! (5 yrs & up).

Cumberland Mountain State Park Programs

All programs provided are on Central Standard Time.  They are also PG, which means parental guidance is expected with any children attending.

 

Tuesday June 2nd:

12:00pm Homestead Tower Trip:  Meet at the park office to carpool over to the Historic Homestead Tower to learn some of the areas rich history.  Get a birds eye view of the homesteads as you climb to the top of the tower!   (bring money for old-timey souvenirs)

1:00pm  Macramé:  Meet the naturalists at shelter one to make fun hemp jewelry!  Supplies will be provided, just bring your creativity!

3:00pm  Nature Hike:  Come hike the Pioneer Short Trail!  Join the naturalists at the boat dock for an afternoon two-mile hike around Byrd Lake.  Wear Sturdy shoes and bring water.  (moderate hike: 2 miles)

 

Wednesday June 3rd:

11:00am  Homestead House Trip: Take a walk through the house of a 1930’s homesteader!  Meet at the park office to carpool over to the Homestead House Museum.

12:00pm Canoe float: Join the naturalists at the boat dock for an afternoon canoe float.  A sign-up sheet will be posted at the boat dock all week.  Space is limited so sign up NOW!! (weather permitting)

2:00pm  Yoga in the Park: Join Laura for relaxation yoga in the park.  Come stretch, breathe, and take in the beauty of nature.  Meet at the park office and bring water.  All ages and experience levels welcome. 

5:00pm  Water aerobics: Join Laura at the pool entrance for an evening water aerobics class.  Never done water aerobics?  No problem!  All experience levels are welcome.  This workout will be fun and high-energy but still easy on the body.  Bring a towel and be ready for a great workout!                         

Thursday June 4th:

10:00am  Native Birds: Want to know what birds you are hearing and seeing on the trails?  Join Ashlie at shelter one to learn about the native birds of Cumberland Mountain! 

11:00am  Frogs, Toads, and Snakes: Do you know the difference between a frog and a toad?  Would you be able to tell a venomous snake from a non-venomous?  Join Laura at shelter one to learn how to identify our native species through color, markings, and calls.

1:00pm  Frisbee in the Park: Join the naturalists on the softball field for a fun afternoon of Frisbee games in the park!  All ages welcome and Frisbees are provided.         

2:00pm  How to Make a Fire Starter:  Join the naturalists at shelter one to make your own fire starter!  Supplies will be provided.  

 

Friday June 5th:

9:00am  Canoe Float: Meet the naturalists at the boat dock for a morning canoe float!  A sign-up sheet will be posted at the boat dock all week.  Spaces are limited so sign up NOW!! (weather permitting)  

12:00pm  Games in the Park: Join the naturalists at the softball field for a fun afternoon of Red Light Green Light, tag, Mother May I?, and more! 

1:00pm  Ozone Falls Trip: This 110 foot waterfall will surely be a happy sight on a hot day! Meet Ashlie outside the park office to carpool over to beautiful Ozone Falls.  Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and swimming is optional.

(strenuous hike)

4:00pm  Scavenger Hunt: Meet the naturalists on the restaurant terrace for a fun scavenger hunt!  A prize will be awarded to the fastest gatherer! 

6:00pm  Highland Rim Bluegrass Band: Join us for a night of good ol’ southern bluegrass provided by the Highland Rim Bluegrass Band!  Meet at the park amphitheater beside the restaurant and admission is free.

 

Saturday June 6th: 

9:00am Nature Hike:  Join the naturalists at the boat dock for a morning hike around beautiful Byrd Lake. Wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and be prepared to cross a swinging bridge.  (moderate hike: 2 miles) 

12:00pm Tie-Dye!!: Join the naturalists at shelter 3 to do some awesome tie-dying!  Dyes will be provided but bring your own shirt.

2:30pm  Big Splash Contest: Come cool off by entering into our Big Splash contest!  All ages are welcome and prizes will be awarded to the campers with the biggest splashes! Meet the naturalists at the pool entrance.
